Help Through a Very Difficult Time

On September 6th, an Air Force veteran contacted the Florida Veteran Support Line, upset and crying. She and her children were living with family members, but she had just been told that they had to move out immediately. She feared being homeless and did not know where to turn, so she called the Florida Veteran Support Line. A Care Coordinator heard her story, validated her emotions, and promised to work tirelessly for her.

To make matters difficult, the agency that provided Support Services for Veteran Families assistance for many homeless veterans in Escambia County lost the grant for Support Services for Veteran Families services with no information on who was taking over. The Florida Veteran Support Line Care Coordinator went to work to find out what agency would be taking over. The Florida Veteran Support Line Care Coordinator called her weekly to check in on her and keep her updated. On September 25th, the Florida Veteran Support Line Care Coordinator received the contact information for the new agency that would be taking over Support Services for Veteran Families services and she called the vet immediately to give her the contact information. The new contract started October 1st and by October 2nd, the veteran turned in all her paperwork to Priority Veteran. Shortly afterwards, the veteran received word that she was eligible for assistance. She was one of the first veterans that was approved under the new contract. That could not have happened without the Florida Veteran Support Line Care Coordinator’s initiative, action, and advocacy on the veteran’s behalf.

Veteran called the Florida Veteran Support Line Care Coordinator to let her know that she was certified on October 29th and will move into her own home on November 1st!! They were able to celebrate that great news together! The Florida Veteran Support Line Care Coordinator was able to help her through a challenging time to get stable housing by sharing the load and helping her navigate the new process. Most importantly, the veteran did not have to go through it alone. The Florida Veteran Support Line continues to be there for veterans in need and help them get the assistance that they need, and they do not have to do it alone.
